Summary

Performance Management Session 5

Coaching Skills

Session Overview

A primary role of the manager today is to actively support the personal development of his/her direct reports. However many managers have not been effectively coached by their managers in the processes and skills of coaching so they lack the necessary insights to be an effective coach to their own people. Without an understanding of what it means to be a good coach their people will not grow and as a consequence neither will they as managers.

This session is designed to equip managers to take on their coaching role and to run effective coaching sessions. It answers the question ‘what is coaching?’ and goes on to provide valuable insights on how to set up a coaching relationship, the different types of coaching, the use of different coaching processes to meet employees’ coaching needs and the skills involved in running effective coaching sessions.

The focus of the session is very much on employee development in order to improve an individual’s motivation and to reinforce the message that ownership of their future is their responsibility. The emphasis is on employee empowerment.

The session contents include a comprehensive trainer’s guide, a full set of delegate handouts and accompanying PowerPoint slides.

Optional, additional material

Why not also use in this section our Management Style Questionnaire as a result of which delegates will identify their primary and secondary management styles and establish what they will need to do differently in order to become a more effective coach.

Find these in the Other Training Resources section of the Rhema Resource Centre.

Session length: 90 minutes without Optional Material; 150 minutes with use of Optional Material
